WICHITA - Four children have been placed in protective custody by police after a witness reported seeing three of them beaten with a belt by a relative Tuesday afternoon.

The witness told police the 51-year-old man beat a 7-year-old girl, a 5-year-old boy and a 4-year-old girl four to five times each on their legs and back at about 1 p.m. Tuesday in the 2700 block of North Gentry.

The woman told police the man was upset with the children for begging for food at a park. The beatings left visible marks, police reported.

The three injured children and their 2-year-old sister were taken to the Wichita Children's Home. The case remains under investigation, and no arrests have been made.
